Letter from Toby and Pam Ebert to the North Devon Journal
SO junior doctors here in North Devon, and across the country, have had to resort to strike action for the first time in 40 years, because Jeremy Hunt's contempt for their concerns leaves them no choice. 98% of doctors voted against his new contract. Why does this Government care so little for the NHS and its workforce? Well many Tory MPs have private health insurance and are on the boards of private health companies so why should they care? Is there an overall desire to dismantle the NHS? Junior doctors train for years often acquiring huge debts along the way. They work long hours in very stressful conditions. Unsocial hours at night and at weekends take their toll. These people should be looked after not undervalued. Staffing shortages in our hospitals caused by lack of funding from this Government is the real threat to patient safety, not doctors. Sympathy of course for those patients who have faced cancellations. They should complain strongly to Jeremy Hunt for his ineptitude and gross mishandling of the talks. We say well done to the doctors for not bowing to pressure and making a stand for a salary, worthy of their skills and safe working conditions that protect them, so they can look after us.
