Party membership in North Devon hits new heights

21/10/2015

Local party membership continues to grow in the wake of the Labour's Leadership elections. Since Jeremy Corbyn's election in September, a further 135 people have joined North Devon Labour Party. Total membership now stands at 586 - an increase of 460 since the General Election in May.

Many new members attended the recent AGM and the clear message from the meeting was for the Party to take the challenge to the Tories and to counter the Austerity policies that are doing so much damage to our public services and hurting so many. All members are invited to the next constituency meeting where the shape of the local campaign for the months ahead will be decided.

If you'd like to join us go to  https://join.labour.org.uk/

The next Constituency meeting will be at The London Inn, Caen St, Braunton on Tuesday 27th October at 7pm.

Please join your welcoming North Devon Labour Party!

We have work to do, with urgency and real ambition, for people and planet!

I came to North Devon thirty years ago, an ex-member in some despair for the Party, for Britain and for the world in need of our lead. I re-joined in May last year and was very glad to be able to vote last August for a party re-think with Jeremy Corbyn.

Maybe because of my communicated thoughts on Party change, or just maybe because of my wife's stronger sympathy with the Green Party (the wrong 'Save Our NHS' poster still in our window), I was suspended from membership just after casting my leadership vote. Having re-stated my commitment - as ever - to the Aims and Values of the Party, AND having re-stated my advice on the clarification of those Aims and Values, I was last month re-admitted to full membership.

My belief is that we have to educate ourselves and each other, and especially our children, to be able to escape from the rule of Fear, to live instead under the rule of Conscience, overcoming the barrage of half-truths and cynical lies by which - in ignorance - we so easily can be led, again and again, into crisis and war and worse.

Our highest post-war social ambitions were 'successfully' confined, and egalitarian ambition - for real democracy - has been further trampled under the confetti of fine words from all sides, most strikingly with Labour acceptance of 'unemployment at least of 5%', the NAIRU consensus for social exclusion and alienation - in the end of demotivation and worse - as our 'best solution' to difficulties in currency management, self-inflicted by tail-chasing wage-inflation.

Under the rule in fact of self-concentrating Money, even our leaders helpless, we already can see that most of our children will face lives with NOT more but LESS security than our own. IF Money is left in-charge, IF we fail to educate for equal partnership, even the brightest of leaders - should they awake - will lack the support to be able to save us, people and planet, from worse than just ruin, collectively our shameful and cosmically deserved ruin.

We live in a universe that not only rewards Reason and Care in the evolution of behaviour, but that also affords evolution in consciousness, unnecessary for the workings of physics and chemistry and biology, the supreme gift. Though always a mixed blessing, our human consciousness enables us - from experience - to enjoy choice, and so our highest imaginable fulfilment in the revelation and then pursuit of Reason and Care.

Evolution and inheritance and accident and socialisation have not been equally kind to all, and it must be part of Labour's vision to be understanding in education, and to be duly supportive of any less able to 'see the point' of our equal-partner democracy. That said, part of the need to gain formal agreement on mutual guarantee of security, is to discourage - and if necessary be able most safely to deal with - the would-be dictatorial, NOT long to suffer either their climbs to power or their consolidations of power.

Our leaders need our active support: they always will. We are lucky to have a HEROIC leader in Jeremy Corbyn, of course from his record and constancy but not least in his being already past normal retirement age, no joke.

Without YOU, all efforts might prove in vain. Please join!

And feel free - in fact duty-bound - to question. The North Devon CLP has a Facebook page and a closed-group for private discussion. Underlying the myriad of issues on which our sharing of knowledge is vital, there is also need to have clarity on our Aims and Values, to be proof against all snipers!

What do you think:

"The Labour Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few; where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe and where we live together freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.

To these ends we work for:

A. A DYNAMIC ECONOMY, serving the public interest, in which the enterprise
of the market and the rigour of competition are joined with the forces of
partnership and co-operation to produce the wealth the nation needs and the
opportunity for all to work and prosper with a thriving private sector and high-
quality public services where those undertakings essential to the common
good are either owned by the public or accountable to them

B. A JUST SOCIETY, which judges its strength by the condition of the weak as
much as the strong, provides security against fear, and justice at work; which
nurtures families, promotes equality of opportunity, and delivers people from
the tyranny of poverty, prejudice and the abuse of power

C. AN OPEN DEMOCRACY,
