In the build up to the referendum there has been 1000's of articles and videos made about the referendum. Our members Facebook group has been full of them.  Here is a selection of the best articles.

"It’s like we’ve organised a house share with our mates in our second year of uni. It wasn’t our idea to start with, but after a few of them seemed really into it we got on board and agreed to split the costs of rent, bills, and occasionally the odd scientific research programme."

Do you know about Labours Membersnet?

3/3/2016

Many local members are not aware of Labour’s Membersnet. This is partly because it is very poorly advertised on the main Labour webpage but it does give access to online training, information about campaigning, who is responsible for creating policy etc. It also allows local Constituent Labour Parties to advertise events that may be of interest to the wider membership.

You can find Membersnet from the main party webpage by going to the very bottom of the Home Page under “get Involved.” You can also find it by just following this link members.labour.org.uk

All members are entitled to sign up, you will be asked to create a user name and a password when you follow the sign up procedures. The top menu gives a link to all planned upcoming online training events.  These are free and all members are entitled to take part. I took part in a training session on policy formation which I found quite interesting.

The Membersnet site also gives details of the South West representatives on the National Policy Forum (NPF) but the link to this is not obvious. If you click on the “Party Activity” top menu item it brings up a list of options, one of which is Agenda. This gives the contact details of everyone on the NPF under the different areas. My experience to date with engaging with one of our area representatives has been a very positive one.

I would encourage all fellow NDCLP members to take advantage of your membership and join Membersnet.

‘Tax credit changes to leave 5700 North Devon families £1,300 worse off’

Labour Party members in North Devon took Labour’s campaign to stop the Tory tax credit cut to the streets of Barnstaple at the weekend.

Local Labour spokesperson Mark Cann said “Hundreds of people stopped to sign the petition and people can still sign online at labour.org.uk/taxcredits. We are calling on Peter Heaton Jones to join with other Conservative MPs to get the Chancellor to change his mind”

‘Three million families will be affected by this cut. In North Devon alone around 5700 families will be hit and stand to lose £1,300 a year. The Government should not be hitting families who work hard day after day just to get by.

“Labour is calling on David Cameron to stop the tax credit cut. We need to balance the books, but the way to do that isn’t to hit the wallets of working families. “

Party membership in North Devon hits new heights

21/10/2015

Local party membership continues to grow in the wake of the Labour's Leadership elections. Since Jeremy Corbyn's election in September, a further 135 people have joined North Devon Labour Party. Total membership now stands at 586 - an increase of 460 since the General Election in May.

Many new members attended the recent AGM and the clear message from the meeting was for the Party to take the challenge to the Tories and to counter the Austerity policies that are doing so much damage to our public services and hurting so many. All members are invited to the next constituency meeting where the shape of the local campaign for the months ahead will be decided.

If you'd like to join us go to  https://join.labour.org.uk/

The next Constituency meeting will be at The London Inn, Caen St, Braunton on Tuesday 27th October at 7pm.

Labour Leadership Elections - North Devon backs Corbyn and Bradshaw

30/7/2015

North Devon Labour Party has backed Jeremy Corbyn to be the new leader of the Labour Party.
At an all members meeting, he was the clear choice, winning over 50% of the vote on the first round of counting. Yvette Cooper was in second place. By a similar margin, Ben Bradshaw's candidacy for Deputy Leader was endorsed by the local party members.

These supporting nominations give an indication of who Labour members are supporting but the final outcome is determined by an all member vote -  the results of which will be announced on September 12th.

Over 40,000 people have joined the Labour Party since May and here in North Devon membership has increased by 50% with many others registering their support.

Many thanks to all who supported Labour on May 7th. We were pleased to increase our share of the vote and now the work begins to continue to build support for Labour in North Devon.

Since the election we have already seen a rise in membership and others have asked how they can help. We now need to develop a clear strategy for taking the Party forward and the leadership election will become a focus for those discussions.
