Marion Mason - Labour Candidate - Chulmleigh & Landkey - County Council
I have lived in North Devon for over thirty years and my children, and now grandchildren, have benefitted from our excellent state schools. I retired from nursing last year having worked at the N.D.D.H. but mostly in a nursing home specializing in dementia care. Since retiring, I have been active in voluntary work with the elderly and continue to enjoy ‘Granny’ duties with my six grandchildren. I spend a lot of time outdoors either in the vegetable patch or working in a small neighbouring wood which is owned by a conservation trust.
I have been an active member of the Labour Party for forty years and have been involved in many local campaigns. I believe in the Labour of Party’s core philosophy of compassion and society’s responsibility to help and encourage the most vulnerable members. Life is getting demonstrably tougher for the ‘have nots’ due to the Conservative’s unfair and devisive austerity measures which have increased child poverty, homelessness, food banks and spiraling levels of inequality.
The current squeeze on local government finances means that there are numerous battles to fight to maintain local services. County Council policy seems focused on reallocating social and economic resources to the already more prosperous areas of Devon. North Devon is missing out. The N.D.D.H. must not be reduced to cottage hospital status. We need funding for Sure Start schemes not grammar schools. We need social housing, not second homes. Above all we need Labour County Councillors to stand up for North Devon and all North Devonians.
